Reinventing the News

Your final project

November 6, 2008 · 2 Comments

For your final project, I would like you to report on an example of Web journalism that you think is worth letting the world know about. This could be a profile of a person who is doing something interesting, a story about a trend — whatever you like.

I also want your story to have a significant new-media component.

Here is what I’m looking for:

  • A 1,000-word story that takes the form of an extended blog post, featuring at least five interviews as well as relevant background research.
  • Your choice of (1) a Flickr slideshow consisting of at least 10 photos taken by you, with titles and captions; (2) a three- to five-minute video shot and edited by you; or (3) a presentation built on a Google map.

I have included the third option so that you may do a non-local story. Just as a for-instance, if you chose to do a story on Global Voices Online, you could do a map pinpointing, say, five places from which bloggers are sending regular dispatches. If you’re a little hazy on what I mean, don’t worry — next week, we’re doing a Google map as a class project.

As I told you in class yesterday, I am willing to be flexible in terms of how you put the pieces together. For instance, if you wish to do a particularly ambitious video, then I would reduce what I’m looking for in terms of your blog post.

You will need to give me a detailed, one-page memo on your intentions at the beginning of class on Wednesday, Nov. 19. That’s two weeks from now — plenty of time.
